Ascend Studio has been appointed to develop the strategic positioning, brand platform and visual identity for the Barts Life Sciences Cluster — a major new health innovation district planned for Whitechapel, London.

Created around The Royal London Hospital and the wider Barts Health NHS Trust, the Cluster will bring together world-leading clinical expertise, real NHS care pathways, one of the world’s most diverse communities and more than £800 million of planned investment.

For Ascend, this is more than a branding project. It is an opportunity to help define how one of London’s most significant emerging life sciences destinations presents itself to the world — as a place where health innovation, clinical research and real-world adoption can come together.

The Cluster will support companies working across AI, robotics, HealthTech, MedTech, diagnostics and data-enabled care, helping innovators move from idea to adoption in live clinical environments.

Ascend’s role is to create a brand strategy and identity that can speak clearly and credibly to a complex mix of audiences — from occupiers, investors and clinical partners to public-sector stakeholders, political audiences and the local community.

The programme will cover the full brand journey, from strategic platform, positioning and messaging through to visual identity and creative direction. The work will need to express both the institutional depth of Barts and the future-facing ambition of a district designed to advance applied health innovation.

Paul Croxton, Founder and Creative Director, Ascend Studio, said:“This is one of the most strategically significant branding commissions in the UK right now. Barts Life Sciences Cluster has an extraordinary story: nearly a millennium of medical progress, one of the NHS’s largest and most diverse clinical environments, major investment backing and a clear ambition to help health technologies move from ideas to real-world impact.

Our job is to translate that into a brand that feels as distinctive, credible and progressive as the opportunity itself. We want to create something grounded in rigorous strategy, but brought to life through bold, intelligent creativity — a brand that can attract the right occupiers and investors, connect with the local community and help put Whitechapel firmly on the global life sciences map.”

Positioning a new life sciences destination

In a competitive global life sciences market, place brands need to do more than look credible. They need to communicate a clear reason to exist.

For Barts Life Sciences Cluster, the brand must help articulate what makes Whitechapel different: the strength of its clinical infrastructure, the depth of its NHS expertise, the relevance of its diverse population and its potential to help innovators generate the evidence needed to move from idea to adoption.

Attracting occupiers, partners and investment

Life sciences, MedTech and HealthTech companies have choices about where they locate, partner and grow. Investors and occupiers need to understand not only the physical opportunity, but the strategic value of the ecosystem around it.

A strong brand can help make that value easier to understand, trust and choose — building confidence before conversations begin and giving the Cluster a clearer voice in the market.

Supporting the UK’s life sciences ambition

The UK has set out a clear ambition to strengthen its position as a global life sciences leader. For that ambition to become visible, places like Barts Life Sciences Cluster need to be clearly positioned, globally relevant and trusted by the audiences they need to attract.

The brand has an important role to play in positioning Whitechapel as a destination for applied health innovation — building confidence among investors, occupiers, public audiences and policymakers.

Connecting innovation to human outcomes

The Cluster is built around a powerful human story. It is about more than buildings, investment or infrastructure.

It is about helping health technologies improve care, reduce inequality, extend possibility and change outcomes for people everywhere. The brand needs to hold that ambition clearly — connecting scientific, clinical and commercial opportunity to the people it ultimately exists to serve.

A brand for applied health innovation

The Barts Life Sciences Cluster sits at the intersection of life sciences, healthcare, clinical research, real estate and innovation. That makes the brand challenge highly complex.

It must feel credible to institutional audiences, compelling to high-growth health technology companies, relevant to investors and respectful of the community and clinical environment in which it is rooted.

Ascend’s approach will focus on translating that complexity into a clear, distinctive and future-facing brand — one that can support investment, attract the right occupiers, build stakeholder confidence and help establish Whitechapel as a globally recognised centre for health innovation.

Rakesh Uppal, CEO, Barts Life Sciences, said:

“As we continue working with Ascend to establish our brand, their rigorous, passionate and deeply strategic creative approach has already shifted our mindset and sharpened our focus. We’re incredibly excited about where the project is heading.”

“Their experience across innovation, brand, real estate and place gives them an unusually broad perspective. For a project of this scale and complexity, with so many stakeholders and audiences, that breadth is invaluable.”
